Jaguar C-X16 Revealed

Jaguar’s C-X16 concept car displays all the signs of being a showstopper at the upcoming Frankfurt Motor Show

It’s been a long time coming, but feast your eyes on what will most likely become Jaguar’s first proper two-seat, rear-wheel drive sports car since 1961, when the sensational E-Type first went on sale.

Jaguar says the “C-X16 is a bold statement of Jaguar’s future design and technological intent” but if you look carefully; there’s a little bit of E-Type in this design. Take a close look at the side-hinged all-glass tailgate, for example, that’s an E-Type trait, but it doesn’t look at all out of place on the concept car either.

Adrian Hallmark, Global Brand Director, Jaguar cars got it right when he said,
“The C-X16 embodies the established Jaguar strengths of sensual design, animal-like agility and inspirational performance and combines these attributes that set us on a course to create sustainable sports cars of the future.
The choice of a six-cylinder powerplant is also curious, only this one is a high-tech supercharged 3.0L V6 hybrid, with a serious amount of grunt when using the F1 style ‘Push to Pass’ function via a button on the steering wheel.

When we say ‘serious’ we mean 350 kW and 685 Nm kind of serious. That translates into some equally scintillating performance numbers, especially when you factor in its 1600kg weight. With that in mind, most performance car enthusiasts with an eye for the direction Jaguar is heading in at the moment, won’t mind going from 0-100km/h in 4.4 seconds, or indeed, a top speed of around 300km/h.

This would put the C-X16 in a dead heat with the larger XKR-S – so we’re assuming that if the series production version of the C-X16 makes it onto the showroom floor with these intended outputs, then the XKR-S will need to be quicker again. That’s a thought to put a smile on the face of Jaguar aficionados, as well as some Porsche 911 fans.

In-gear acceleration is just as potent. Step on the right pedal and you’ll go from 80km/h – 120km/h in a blistering 2.1 seconds.

But for those with equal concerns for the global environment, the C-X16 green motion in spades too, with its ability to travel at speeds up to 80km/h under solely electric power with CO2 emissions at just 165 g/km.
Mated to the C-X16’s eight-speed gearbox is a motor generator, which draws power from a battery pack that is positioned behind the front seats to provide a 50:50 weight balance for dynamic handling.

Jaguar C-X16
Jaguar’s Design Director, Ian Callum says of the C-X16’s design:
“This car has been designed from first principles. It is an evolution of the design ethos of past Jaguars and defines the agenda for a future of dramatic, innovative sports cars. Purity of line and intent is what Jaguar does best.”
Jaguar is saying that the C-X16 is the shortest car they’ve designed since the XK120.
