Tata Motors hikes car prices; Nano and Aria prices unchanged!

Tata Motors Limited has hiked prices of all cars barring the Nano hatchback and the Aria Crossover on the back of rising input costs. Though a price hike was expected within the first few days of 2012, Tata had managed to hold on to hiking prices of its cars until the second week of February. Now though, the third largest car maker in India has increased prices of all its cars between INR 7,000 to INR 12,000, except the Nano and Aria, whose prices remain unchanged.

Tata Safari Storme at 2012 New Delhi Auto Expo

This price hike is effective from the 9th of February, 2012, and Tata dealers across the country, have been notified of the same. Here’s official word from Tata Motors’ spokesperson regarding the price hike,
The high input costs have been impacting us for quite some time. We have decided to pass on some burden to our customers. The quantum of the hike will vary between Rs 7,000 and Rs 12,000 depending on the model. The price hike has been effected since yesterday.
Both the Nano hatchback and the Aria Crossover haven’t performed as well as Tata Motors would have wanted to, at the hustings. This has made Tata adopt an aggressive sales promotion policy on both the cars. Sizable discounts are being offered on both the Nano and the Aria at the dealership level and this has led to an increase in sales of both these cars.

For instance, both the Nano and the Aria registered significant growth of numbers in January 2012, a month in which Tata Motors edged out South Korean automaker Hyundai to become the second largest automaker in India in terms of monthly sales. The next big launch from Tata Motors is the Safari Storme SUV, which Tata showcased at the 2012 Auto Expo, and which will compete with the best selling Mahindra XUV500 crossover.

2015 Land Rover Defender and the Tata Aria could share platforms! May be produced in Pune, India!

Tata Motors taking over Jaguar-Land Rover is giving rise to a few pleasantly surprising synergies, with the latest buzz suggesting that the next generation 2015 Land Rover Defender could share its platform with the next generation Aria. That ain’t all, the 2015 Defender could be a made-in-India model exported all over the world as a completely knocked down kit, for local assembly elsewhere. Also, the 2015 Defender is expected to feature a body-on-ladder construction. Does this mean that the next generation Aria also will go the body-on-ladder way?

Land Rover DC100 Sport Concept

It seems like as both the Defender and the Aria are set to share the same platform. Also, the 2015 Defender and the Aria Crossover we hear, could use plenty of common parts, ranging from the engines and transmissions to the interiors and the suspension. The main idea behind building the 2015 Defender in India will be to keep a tight leash on costs, thus making the off roader accessible to a large section of buyers. The next gen Aria will also benefit from this alliance as vast improvements in quality levels could be had, making the Aria an outstanding product in its class.

Land Rover DC100 Sport Concept
The 2015 Defender is said to be closely based on the design of the butch and futuristic looking Land Rover DC100 concept. Tata is also building a new engine plant at Chikli for manufacturing engines for the upcoming Jaguar XF 2.2 diesel sedan. This plant is expected to cater to the 2015 Defender as well, with local sourcing for components to reduce costs. All in all, this move is a landmark one when it comes to demonstrate the finesse in Indian build quality to a worldwide audience and Tata Motors really seems to be using the synergies gained from the JLR acquisition to the fullest potential.

Tata Aria Automatic showcased at the 2012 Indian Auto Expo!

Tata Aria Automatic Concept

We brought you wind about an automatic version of the Tata Aria doing the testing rounds a while ago and here is some proof. Tata Motors revealed the automatic version of the Aria at the ongoing 2012 Indian Auto Expo. The Aria, which represents Tata Motors flagship vehicle will get a G85 six speed automatic gearbox with tiptronic function. This automatic gearbox will feature three modes, comfort, economy and sport modes.

The Aria Automatic presented at the exposition is still a prototype which means that these specifications and external appearances might change on the production versions. The Aria Automatic also featured plenty of visual changes like roof rails, a roof spoiler and a clear lens tail lamp to distinguish it from the different versions of the Aria 4X2 and 4X4, which are in production currently. The Aria in automatic guise gets more power and torque, at 155 Bhp and 400 Nm respectively.

On when this gearbox will make it to production Arias is still something we’ve got to wait and watch out for. Nevertheless, what is very interesting is that this gearbox could also arrive into the Safari Storme in due course of time, more so since the Mahindra XUV500 also is touted to receive a 6 speed automatic gearbox very soon. Considering the competition intensifying, Tata Motors wouldn’t want to be left behind for the lack of an automatic gearbox option.

Tata Aria Automatic Concept - Technical Specification

Therefore, both the Aria and the Safari Storme might get this 6 speed automatic gearbox in due course of time. That said, we’re wondering where the automatic version of the Aria will be priced and positioned at considering that Tata Motors has had to slash prices of the Aria by many lakh rupees for the crossover’s sales to pick up in the Indian market. Perhaps, Tata Motors might target the export market with the automatic variant of the Aria given that we’ve spotted Aria LHD versions on test.

Scoop: Tata Aria Left Hand Driver sans AT

Tata Motors’ flagship product, the Tata Aria Crossover is headed for markets abroad and here’s definitive proof as our roving eye in the sky, EarthFusion swooped down on an on-test Tata Aria LHD. The left hand drive version of the Aria however did not feature an automatic gearbox. So the same five speed manual gearbox might be what the export version of the Aria could feature although we do know for a fact that Tata is working on an automatic transmission for the Aria.

The Aria LHD’s interiors as well as the exteriors did not show any visible changes from the current Aria. Also, we expect the same 140 Bhp-320 Nm 2.2 Liter DICOR turbodiesel engine equipped with a dual mass flywheel to do duty in the Aria. The Tata Aria has been a sales dud in the domestic market and could do well if Tata repositions the Crossover with a price drop. Perhaps, the move to sell the Aria in developed markets will bring in the desired volumes for Tata Motors.

Talking about the export markets, both the Tata Safari SUV and the Tata Xenon pick up are decent sellers for Tata in export markets around the world and the Aria could follow in these vehicles’ tyre marks. The Tata Aria is now available with a discount of close to INR 2 Lakhs, which makes it a superb proposition for folks wanting a roomy and capable crossover which is extremely comfortable too.

This discounted price of the Aria, currently being called a December offer might extend into the next few months as the Aria is simply not selling at the original price it was positioned at. Al said, the Aria does have a lot of positives going for it like the  interiors, which is the best ever on a Tata car. The Aria feels better put together than other Tata cars and also comes with a range of features that are offered only in cars twice its price.

Tata Aria Crossover selling at a special “December” discount of upto INR 2 Lakhs!

Tata Aria MPV Crossover

Sheer value for money; That is precisely what the Tata Aria Crossover is, especially with the “December” discount offer doled out by Tata dealers. Tata Motors dealers are now offering the Aria with a massive discount of up to INR 2 Lakhs. This discounted price includes a flat cash discount of INR 1.6 Lakhs along with an exchange bonus of INR 40 thousand. The base variant of the Aria 4X2 is now available for an ex-showroom price of INR 9.99 Lakhs. Tata Motors is calling this offer as the Tata Aria anniversary sale.

However, we feel that this “December” discount offered by Tata Motors is actually the price at which the 2 wheel drive Aria should have been priced in the first place. The Aria has stumbled to its lowest ever monthly sales last month, clocking just 140 units. So, this represents a good time for Tata Motors to reposition the Aria at a more attractive price to ensure that the Crossover begins selling to its true potential.

The Aria is Tata Motors’ flagship products and hence features a better fit and finish than any Tata car. Despite this, the Aria has not fired the imagination of Indian luxury crossover buyers mainly due to the high price at which it is positioned. The Aria originally debuted with a permanent all wheel drive system and a five speed manual transmission. The Aria featured the 140 Bhp-320 Nm 2.2 Liter DICOR engine from the Tata Safari.

A dual mass flywheel was added to this engine for better refinement when it made it into the Aria’s engine bay. Earlier this year, Tata Motors introduced a two wheel drive version of the Aria, and priced it much lower than the all wheel drive variant. Sales, however have slipped after showing initial promise on the back of the 2 wheel drive version’s launch. Tata Motors is also testing an automatic gearbox option for the Aria, which could be launched in the coming months.

Tata Aria Automatic to be launched by end of 2012

Tata Aria

Tata Motors has set the stage for the launch of the automatic transmission (AT) variant of Aria in India and is expected to roll out the crossover by the end of 2012. The price of the automatic variant is likely to be around Rs. 1 lac more than the manual transmission variant. However, whether the giant home-grown carmaker will offer the automatic transmission in both 4×2 and 4×4 version is not definite.

It must be noted that the Aria automatic has been seen during its testing in Pune recently, which assures its launch in India. The upcoming version of Aria is expected to give considerable competition to the likes of automatic versions of Mahindra Scorpio, Ford Endeavour and Chevrolet Captiva.

As far as the looks of the AT variant is concerned, the only difference will be the inclusion of an ‘auto’ badge on the exterior. As a matter of fact, Aria stands out from other Tata cars in terms of interiors, fit and finish and a dashboard that is soft touch. The seats set an example in the terms of comfort.

During long drives, passengers seating on the front and in the middle row can relax as they have adequate headroom, legroom and shoulder room. Speaking of the rear, the third row of seats lacks user space and is best suited for kids only. The automatic variant will enhance the overall driving especially in short distance urban commuting.

Tata is likely to use a six-speed automatic transmission for the Aria. The Aria AT will be powered by the same 2.2-litre DICOR engine that makes 138 bhp of power and 320 Nm of torque. We expect the Aria AT to accelerate from 0-100 kmph in about 16 seconds. One can expect a mileage of roughly 12.5 kmpl for the Aria AT.

The Aria AT is expected to include all the features found in the manual variant depending on the trim levels. The safety features offered on the Tata Aria AT top-end variant are likely to include Electronic Stability Programme (ESP), ABS, EBD and traction control, six airbags, cruise control, side intrusion beams and a collapsible steering column.

There will be cruise control switches, Bluetooth and audio controls mounted on the steering wheel. In addition, there will be features like satellite-based navigation system, leather upholstery, darkness sensing head lamps, rain sensing wipers, glove box chiller, 6 CD audio system and reverse camera expected in the AT variant.

The Aria AT will likely be priced Rs. 1 lac more than the manual variant. Hence the Aria AT top-end Prestige 4×2 variant will be available at a price of Rs. 15.26 lacs while the 4×4 variant will be priced at Rs. 16.84 lacs.

Thus, the variety that Tata has offered in Aria seems to be a hit in the Indian market where buyers are having a great penchant for high-end vehicles.

Tata Motors eyes Tata Aria export push to South Africa

Hot on the heels of M&M launching its XUV 500 in South Africa, automaker Tata Motors is testing its cross-over Aria to be shipped to South Africa too.

The aggressive stance adopted by domestic carmakers to push exports comes as a no surprise since the South African auto market is growing at a rate of 20 per cent. Dwindling homes sales also contribute to this strategy.

"It is also important to understand that that part of the world is going to attract a lot of investment in terms of cost of production coming down and labour being cheap," said Gaurang Shah, Asst Vice President at Geojit BNP Paribas Financial Services.

In fact, sources indicate that Tata Motors is on the verge setting up a plant in Kenya to tap the demand in East Africa. Africa currently makes up nearly 15-20 per cent of the company's total exports.

Tata will soon begin exports of the Indica Vista and nano to these markets too and it’s also looking to step up the volumes on its CVs with models like the Super Ace, Prima trucks and the Marcopolo range of buses.

Tata Sons Chairman Ratan Naval Tata said always envisioned a hub and spoke operation for taking the Nano overseas. Now it is looking to employ the same for the entire passenger car range. Any success in Africa would provide a stepping stone to then using similar means in Latin America - another region Tata is eyeing with great interest.

Tata Aria Automatic (AT): Scooped by Carwale

Tata Motors had launched their new flagship, the Aria last year. The Aria is the first Indian crossover and was built on ladder frame. Initially, the Aria was offered only as a 4x4, with the option to shift to 4x2 on the fly.

Tata recently introduced the 4x2 version of the Aria to increase its volumes. Now, our sources confirm that Tata has been working on the automatic version of the Aria. The automatic version of the Aria has been undergoing tests in India as well as abroad. We believe that Tata could utilise some of its technology and expertise from JLR to develop their first automatic transmission.  The car had undergone certain tests in the UK for about 3000-4000kms.

The automatic transmission will add another option for the Aria buyers. Since, the current Safari, the new upcoming Safari Merlin and the Grande have the same 2.2-litre engine DiCOR engine that powers the Aria, Tata could use these boxes on them as well.

Clear Channel Mudra launches outdoor execution with Tata Aria 4X2 launch

Tata Aria 4x2, An innovative outdoor Execution from Clear Channel Mudra
Clear Channel Mudra has launched an innovative outdoor execution for Tata Aria, a crossover SUV produced by Tata Motors. For 21 days starting from this month, Clear Channel Mudra has helped launch Tata Aria 4X2, a never-before experience for commuters.

The key task was to build awareness & interest around the 4X2 version as well as draw eyeballs and become an intense talking point about the brand. Clear Channel’s aim was thus to build Outdoor as a support medium to print & TVC by spreading awareness and generating leads. One very important aspect was to target dealerships across India, encouraging more walk-ins & enquiries. Rather than being present at every nook & corner, the agency’s strategy focused on planning in a more concentrated way to address the target audience at key commercial areas, business centres of the cities, automobile hubs, areas in the vicinity of Tata Motor’s dealers & Airports.

Apart from the ongoing monsoon season in India, the biggest challenge for Clear Channel Mudra was to gain attention and generate excitement around it’s the product offering. The company used some unconventional media. A pilot was carried out on the heavy commercial vehicles wherein a 15ft long Tata Aria creative was displayed on both the sides. These containers/vehicles traveled across the nation through National Highways. This provided a good opportunity to showcase the communications on the highways which lack good media options. The amount of buzz created and the increase in footprint has resulted in scaling up the campaign to more number of vehicles and routes. As a unique guerilla marketing tactic, an actual vehicle is being placed at one of the busiest and strategically important junctions of Mumbai- Mahim causeway. This is coupled with a huge backlit revolving Tata Aria logo. This is the first time any automobile player in India would be showcasing their product right at the playground- The Roads! Inspite of Mahim causeway being cluttered with 15-20 different messages displayed at any given point of time, the campaign has succeeded in captivating maximum attention. Also, vigilant monitoring schedules have helped in reducing the turnaround time substantially.

Adille Sumariwalla, MD Clear Channel Mudra said “We launched the Aria last year, which was a tough act to follow this time around, since the benchmark set by the successful campaign was pretty high. Owing to the prevalent high clutter levels in the automobile and non-automobile categories, we had a further challenging task to create awareness and generate interest in the new variant to the relevant audience. The campaign had good visibility, with high quality sites at frequent intervals across markets minimizing media wastage and spillovers. Our impeccable planning made sure that campaign had an appropriate share of voice with proportionate share of expenses. The creative was focused and lent itself beautifully to the medium, with an arresting visual and clear communication of the message. This provided an early acceptance to the campaign. Execution wise we adhered closely to a strict rollout schedule to avoid delays that were brought on by the many holidays during the launch period, yet capitalize on the same, to drive test drive and purchase decisions.”

Rajesh Nair, Head Utility Vehicle Product Group said "Aria as a brand is focused toward a specific kind of customer, who is spoilt for choice in the current scenario. Therefore while the product needs to conform to high standards and expectations, the communication also needs to ensure the features of the car are highlighted. With its large format hoardings and close proximity to the user, outdoor plays an important role for an Automobile brand. Spreading the campaign across 38 key markets with sites at key locations definitely helped in building a good reach. In addition to the outdoor campaign, the team executed some innovative ideas to garner good visibility for the brand. Displaying the actual product on Mahim Causeway and putting up creative’s on the vehicles has helped create a buzz. It was a good experience working with Clear channel Mudra for this campaign. They helped in quality planning and execution of the campaign across markets.

Road Test and Review: Tata Aria 4X2

You probably think a mid-life makeover of the Tata Aria isn't worth your time. You might be making a hasty judgment there. The Tata Aria 4x2 is not just another makeover. It extends the range to new segments and redefines several benchmarks by slashing prices by a whopping Rs. 1.3 lakh. If that isn’t incentive enough, take it on a drive to find out whether Aria 4X2 will be a game changer for Tata.

No better place than Pune for a test drive -- with a wide variety of driving conditions spanning across the Yashwantrao Chavan Expressway, idyllic hill stations a stone’s throw away, most indisciplined city traffic and off-roading prospects within the city limits, thanks to roads that have forgotten even the smell of tarmac.

Styling
The angular, wrap-around dual-barrel headlamp with projector beam and the signature Tata grille that we saw on Vista and Manza give Aria an aggressive look. Step in, oh sorry, walk-in (Passengers can simply walk into the Aria, rather than having to climb up or get down, thanks to the low-floor design) and you'll be quite impressed, rather surprised. The incredibly spacious cabin has three-row seats that are strategically arranged to provide passengers with acres of head, leg and shoulder rooms. Both front and middle seats are adjustable so that even a 5'6" person can comfortably sit in the third row. Yet, the third row is for kids, I must say. There are AC vents on B and C pillars, providing satisfactory cooling in all three rows equally.  All seats, except the driver's, can be flat-folded, giving you lots of luggage space - even space to stuff in a Tata Nano.

The dual-tone dashboard is neat, but not that exciting. Unlike the 4X4 edition, the new Aria has black & beige interiors with wood inserts and it looks much better than the black & plum dashboard with brush metal inserts. The Aria 4X2 lacks Satellite Navigation system and reverse guide camera, but has the Ultrasonic Reverse Guide System instead. There are two gloveboxes, one of which can be used as a chiller, too. The 2 DIN integrated music system with 6 speakers is great but again, nothing 'exceptional' about it.

Aria 4X2 has a constructive driver information system that gives you real-time information about fuel-consumption, distance to empty, engine performance and other critical data. Tiltable steering, electronically adjustable and foldable mirrors, height-adjustable driver's seat provide the driver with lots of ease.

Safety
Tata had taken safety to new heights with the Aria 4X4. Aria 4X2 also benefits from the same features, both active and passive, that only vehicles over Rs 30 lakh can boast of. While active features like ABS , EBD and all disc brakes aid steerability and control in emergency braking, driver and passenger airbags ensure protection from front impacts. However, Aria 4X2 lacks curtain airbags. Passive features include Hydroformed chassis members that enhance strength and rigidity with reduced weight, crumple zones to absorb impact energy, side impact beams within doors, collapsible steering, auto door unlock during accidents et al.

Performance
At the heart of the Tata Aria is the same 2.2 litre Direct Injection Common Rail (DICOR) engine that powers the 4X4 Aria. Belting along a resplendently smooth mountain road that leads to Lavasa, the Aria didn’t gasp. The potent motor has an astonishing spread of power, pulling hard from low in the rev range and getting progressively and fantastically stronger all the way to the 4,400rpm red-line. Coupled with variable turbine technology and 32-bit ECU, the motor delivers 140 PS power and 320 Nm torque. It is equipped with a dual mass flywheel that isolates torsional vibrations from the powertrain, thus providing a NVH free environment in the cabin. The new Mark II gearbox is mated to the engine ensuring a slicker shifting. Turn the ignition and the Aria burbles gently into life. But as your foot goes down, it becomes a monster, accelerating swiftly. Trust me, there’s very less or zero turbo lag, this coupled with minimal gear shifts makes city driving duck soup

Ride and Handling
Aria does a remarkable job of protecting its passengers from rutted Tarmac. Unlike many others in this segment, Aria doesn’t juggle the middle-seat passengers. Independent double wishbone suspension in front and five link rear suspensions mean it rides amazingly and the shortage of body lean is amazing for such a tall, heavy car. There’s no need to slow down unless you are cruising along a dreadfully damaged road.  Aria is capable of dampening the harshness of ruts, potholes and even small speed breakers. You feel really confident behind Aria’s wheel, thanks to precise steering response, tremendous braking and laudable cornering capabilities.
When I halted amid dense fog of the Lavasa hills for a brief photography session, a couple of guys curiously chasing me on their two-wheelers all the way uphill, passed by, yelling – “naaice car!”- and that says it all.

Pricing
The Tata Aria 4X2 is available in three trim levels and the prices are:
Tata Aria 4×2 Pure – 11.61 lakh
Tata Aria 4×2 Pleasure – 12.61 lakh
Tata Aria 4×2 Prestige – 14.26 lakh

Tata Aria 4X2 launched in India at a price of INR 11.61 Lakhs ex-showroom Delhi

Tata Aria 4x2 Crossover
What had to happen a year ago has finally happened, as Tata Motors Limited has finally unwrapped the Tata Aria Crossover 4X2 cut price version, even as the Mahindra W201 World SUV and the Force One SUV launches are just around the corner.

The dismal sales of the Tata Aria Crossover, could be one reason why Tata has come up with the 4X2 version at a very competitive price tag beginning from INR 11.61 Lakhs. Tata has launched an all new variant of the Aria 4X2 called the Pure, which will now be the entry level Aria, at INR 11.61 Lakhs, ex-showroom Delhi. Two more variants called the Pleasure and Prestige sit above the Pure variant, at INR 12.61 Lakhs and INR 14.21 Lakhs respectively.

Tata Aria 4x2 Crossover
The Tata Aria 4X2 Crossover is now expected to give a tough fight to the likes of the Toyota Innova’s top end variant and with the launch of the cut price 4X2 version of the Aria, expect sales of the flagship model from Tata motors’ stable to dramatically pick up. The spec level of the middle and top end variant of the 4X2 version of the Aria, namely the Pleasure and Prestige, are  to remain the same as on the 4X4 version with the only significant difference being that of the deletion of 4X4 system.

Comparing the price of the Tata Aria 4X2 version with the 4X4 version, it can be found that the price difference is to the tune of INR 60,000. This seems to be a deliberate tactic by Tata Motors to ensure that the price difference between the 4X2 version and 4X4 versions aren’t too large to ensure that existing Aria customers don’t get miffed. However, the Aria 4X2 Pure variant being the stripped out version will ensure that it sits at that psychological price point of under INR 12 Lakh to bring prospective buyers into Tata showrooms.

Tata Aria 4X2 launched in India at a price of INR 11.61 Lakhs ex-showroom Delhi
